Sehwg Still Optimistic of qualifying for play-off

elhi Daredevils have lost six of their nine matches in Indian Premier League and are looking down and out, but captain Virender Sehwag has not lost hope of qualifying for the knock-out round. Sehwag said qualifying for the next round of the tournament is tough but not impossible and they can draw i
nspiration from Deccan Chargers' performance in the 2010 edition.

"It is difficult but not impossible (reaching the play-off) but for that we have to play really well and believe in ourselves. Deccan Chargers won five matches in a row in one of the tournament and there is no reason why we cannot do that," said Sehwag.

Daredevils were crushed by Kochi Tuskers by seven wickets at the Ferozshah Kotla on Monday. It was their fifth loss at home and they have now moved down to eight place with six points.

Sehwag said they just failed to put enough runs on the board. Daredevils were restricted to 140/6 and Kochi Tuskers reached to the target in 15 overs.

"We did not score enough runs. We should have scored at least 170-180. The pitch was good for batting."

Asked why the batting fails to click if he and Warner perish early, Sehwag said: "Yes if Warner and I give a good start then we are a different side. But it is not that the rest of the batsmen cannot score. There are good batsmen. Venu has been doing well. Its just that if we lose early wickets then the middle order comes under pressure."

The India opener said that defending a small total was always difficult on this pitch.

"When the opposition batsmen comes hard on you and when you are defending a small total, it is difficult."

Asked about losing their home matches, Sehwag said: "It is a good track to bat on. We have to apply ourselves, put the runs on the board and bowl well to win."

Another

In his Four matches in this Tri series he had scored 240 runs . In that 240 runs there is One century[110(93)] and one halfcentury[99*(99)] with the average of 80.00 and the strike rate 105.26 including 32 fours and 3 swashbuckling sixers.
Another beautiful knock from viru created a thunder in the SL minds that they should have to target the daring man first on the final. For this great and match winning knock he had been awarded the man of the match.
M S Dhoni: Viru seems to be the only batsmen who can bat in this tournament. The whole team is struggling with the batting and this contribution in this crucial game stands out.

Ross Taylor: They way Viru batted and his partnership with Dhoni took the game away from us.
Sehwag: The wicket was better for batting. We were not in a good position at the start, but I decided to attack and I am glad I got to my century. I am only disappointed that I could not carry on. The way I batted in the past, we got into a good position but our middle order could not carry on the good work. I am really looking forward to the final against Sri Lanka.

More records beckon Sehwag

With his devil-may-care approach to batting, Virender Sehwag is an unlikely batsman to hammer the coveted triple century in Test cricket. But he already has two against his name.

Virender Sehwag India’s only triple centurion now stands just 16 runs from outdoing the legendary Don Bradman and becoming the first ever to complete three scores in excess of 300 in Test history!

The breathtakingly compiled unbeaten 284 runs he scored on Thursday in the ongoing third and final Test against Sri Lanka at the Brabourne stadium is already a record of sorts. It is the second fastest Test double hundred, bettered only by Nathan Astle of New Zealand who had scored his double ton in 2001-02 in 153 balls to Sehwag’s 168 in his Thursday’s effort — a mere 15 deliveries more.

Betters Bradman

Yet, the Indian opener’s 284 is a record. It is the third highest score by a batsman on a single day of a Test match. Only Bradman and distinguished English batsman W Hammond had scored more runs on a single day of a Test match — 309 not out and 295 not out, respectively. But both of them had scored these runs almost 80 years ago. Significantly, both of them had taken more deliveries (and perhaps also time) than Sehwag took for his unbeaten effort.

With Sehwag, nothing can be said with any certainty though cricket itself is better known as the game of glorious uncertainties. But, should he carry his form with him to the crease on Friday, the ‘Nawab of Najafgarh’ not only stands a chance to become the first batsman to score three triple hundreds in Test cricket, but also beat Brian Lara’s record for the highest individual Test score of 400.

If he does, it is almost certain that he will get it much faster and with many more hits to the fence and beyond it. He has already hit 40 fours and seven sixes.

As records fell like nine pins, Sehwag batted like only he can — carefree, uninhibited and supremely entertaining while at the same time avoiding risks.

‘Exhilarating’ somehow doesn’t do justice to the Sehwag brand of batsmanship. The destroyer from Delhi transcends description, because words can seldom express the impact he has on a game of cricket when he bats like he did on Thursda

Sehwag Sizzel's in India's win

Sehwag Sizzel's in India's win

One of the key instructions given to the Indian team after their 200-run mauling by New Zealand was to take a three-day break. A lot was made of this decision to go into sleep mode during the build-up to the World Cup. But Monday justified the think-tank's decision as India cruised to a six-wicket. victory over Sri Lanka to open their account in the tri-series
A wonderfully-paced 100-ball unbeaten 99 under pressure from opener Virender Sehwag enabled India, pursuing 171, defeat Sri Lanka by six wickets in a Micromax ODI tri-series match at the Rangiri Stadium here on Monday. India won with a bonus point.
Sehwag exploded towards the finish, pulling seamer Angelo Mathews for the maximum and striking off-spinner Suraj Randiv over square-leg for a six. With the scores level, he thwacked a no-ball from Randiv over the long-off fence but the stroke did not count as India had already clinched the match after the bowler overstepped the crease. Sehwag was adjudged Man-Of-the-Match.
Skipper Mahendra Singh Dhoni (23 not out) provided Sehwag fine support in a decisive unbeaten 80-run partnership for the fifth wicket. The Indian captain's off-drive off Lasith Malinga stood out.
